Description of RISE

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is Sweden’s state-owned research institute and innovation partner, working to support sustainable growth, competitiveness, and societal transformation. With over 3,000 employees and a broad infrastructure portfolio, RISE bridges academia, industry, and the public sector, offering applied research, testbeds, and demonstration facilities across multiple domains including bioeconomy, materials, digitalization, and energy. RISE Processum AB (Coordinator organization of LIGNOFUN), a subsidiary of RISE, is located in Örnsköldsvik at the heart of Sweden’s biorefinery region. Processum operates as an innovation hub with expertise in biotechnology, green chemistry, process development, and scale-up, providing infrastructure that spans from high-throughput strain development and laboratory-scale systems to pilot- and demo-scale bioreactors, fermentation, and downstream processing. This unique environment allows for seamless progression from concept to industrially relevant technology readiness levels (TRLs).

What is your task in the project?

RISE coordinates the LIGNOFUN project and provides key technical expertise and infrastructure through its Bioeconomy Arena testbeds. Using advanced chemistry and biotechnology facilities, RISE refines lignin-derived monoaromatic waste stream and develops scalable bioprocesses to convert it into cis,cis-muconic acid (ccMA) and futher converts it into adipic acid via chemical catalysis. RISE also performs the TEA and SSBD analysis in this project.

Role, Relevance & Interfaces in the Project

RISE leads the LIGNOFUN project and takes on the challenge of scaling enzymatic funneling of lignin-derived monoaromatics into cis,cis-muconic acid, a novel approach that requires advanced bioprocess development and integration of chemistry and biotechnology testbeds. This task is important because it provides the critical conversion step that enables lignin, an underutilized side stream, to be transformed into high-value sustainable chemicals. Through the RISE Bioeconomy Arena and the Processum Biorefinery Cluster, RISE connects to a wide network of industrial companies, SMEs, researchers, and regional actors, ensuring that project outcomes are aligned with both industrial needs and societal sustainability goals.
