Description of KEAS

  • Maintaining its uninterrupted production for over half a century in the wood-based panel industry, Kastamonu Entegre is a global-scale company engaged in production in 6 countries, with investments in Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Italy and Türkiye. In the USA, it has a company that carries out wood chip supply and logistics processes. Kastamonu Entegre has become the world’s fourth largest company in the wood-based panel industry with its overseas investments for 27 years, and has been among the top three manufacturers in Europe.  It undertakes 7% of the world laminate flooring production alone.
  • Acting with the mission of preserving natural balance and contributing to the society, the company is one of the three companies that prepared the sustainability report in the industry. It carries out studies on product and process development, efficiency increase, efficient resource utilization and advanced material technologies in its R&D center in Istanbul, which it has set up to develop technologies of the future.

What is your task in the project LIGNOFUN?

Thanks to the ability gluing effect of lignin in wood structure, this natural biopolymer has been of interest in wood-based panel sector as a resin component. In LIGNOFUN project, KEAS acts as an end user for lignin phenol formaldehyde resins that will be supplied by partners, that differs in not only depolymerization methods but also allocation amounts. Main target of KEAS is achieving P2-type particleboard without compromising panel properties. Additionally, flame retardancy will be studied as an objective of the project. As a sector trend, allocation of biobased material content in traditional resins has a potential for bioeconomy concept.

Role, Relevance & Interfaces in the Project

Wood based panel industry seeks for active, fast curing binders for productivity. Unfortunately, lignin based adhesives generally do not satisfy industry conditions. Lignin will be employed in formaldehyde based adhesives with different pressing conditions will evaluated for particleboard side.

Not only different depolymerization methods but also the resin synthesizing conditions will be carefully studied to optimize panel properties.

We have been collaborating with global and local furniture producers, universities, and research institutes to develop wood-based panels with increased bio-content.
